Your wedding day is behind you, and now comes the part you actually get to enjoy at a slower pace. A honeymoon is not just a vacation. It is the first trip you take as a married couple, and it sets a tone. The destination matters, the pacing matters, and the details matter more than most people realize until they are already there.
Every couple is different. Some want nothing but a beach and a cold drink. Others want culture, food, and a city that keeps surprising them. Some want both. The ten destinations below consistently rise to the top when I am working with honeymooners, not because they are the most obvious choices, but because they genuinely deliver on the promise of a memorable, romantic trip.
If your version of a perfect honeymoon involves waking up over turquoise water, the Maldives is hard to argue with. Overwater villas, private beaches, and some of the best snorkeling in the world make it an easy choice for couples who want beauty, seclusion, and absolutely nothing on the itinerary except each other.
Where to stay: Gili Lankanfushi and Soneva Jani are both exceptional at the luxury end. Cocoa Island by COMO is a strong mid-range option, and Embudu Village works well for couples who want the setting without the premium price.
Bali earns its reputation. It combines lush jungle, spiritual atmosphere, gorgeous beaches, and genuinely warm hospitality in a way that feels effortless once you are there. Ubud is the heart of it for couples who want something more intimate and culturally rich, while the southern coast offers more energy and nightlife if that is your preference.
Where to stay: The Four Seasons at Sayan is extraordinary if you want full luxury. COMO Uma Ubud offers stunning valley views at a slightly softer price point. The Kayon Resort is a lovely mid-range option with beautiful villas and a very peaceful setting.
Santorini is famous for a reason, and that reason is the view. Caldera sunsets, white architecture cascading down volcanic cliffs, and wine produced from some of the oldest vines in the world make it genuinely romantic. It is worth knowing that the island is popular and can feel crowded in peak season, so timing and hotel selection make a real difference.
Where to stay: Katikies and Canaves Oia Suites both deliver the classic Santorini experience with exceptional service. Grace Hotel Santorini offers polished mid-range luxury. Hotel Thira is a more budget-conscious option that still captures the views.
Kyoto is for couples who want their honeymoon to feel like something they will spend years describing. Temples at dawn, traditional ryokan stays, private tea ceremonies, and a pace that is unhurried and deliberate. Japan as a whole is remarkably well-organized for travel, and Kyoto is its cultural soul.
Where to stay: HOSHINOYA Kyoto is one of the most unique properties in the country, accessible only by boat. The Ritz-Carlton Kyoto blends contemporary luxury with traditional Japanese design beautifully. Hotel The Celestine Kyoto Gion is a refined mid-range choice in a wonderful location.
Not every couple wants to slow down on their honeymoon. If you and your partner are energized by movement, scenery, and doing things together, Queenstown is extraordinary. Bungee jumping, skiing, lake cruises, and some of the most dramatic mountain landscapes in the world. It is a place that feels alive.
Where to stay: Eichardt’s Private Hotel is intimate and beautifully positioned on the lakefront. Matakauri Lodge is perfect for couples who want a quieter, more secluded retreat. Hotel St Moritz offers comfortable mid-range accommodations with great views.
Tuscany is slow travel at its most romantic. Rolling hills, vineyard dinners, medieval hilltowns, and food that makes you rethink every meal you have ever had. It is the kind of destination that rewards couples who want to linger, explore at their own pace, and feel genuinely immersed in a place rather than just passing through.
Where to stay: Belmond Castello di Casole and Rosewood Castiglion del Bosco are both spectacular countryside retreats. Castello Banfi offers strong mid-range value with beautiful surroundings. Agriturismo Il Rigo is a charming, more affordable farmhouse option for couples who love character over polish.
Maui is a wonderful honeymoon choice if you want tropical beauty without leaving the country. The beaches are genuinely stunning, the Road to Hana is one of the most scenic drives in the world, and the mix of relaxation and soft adventure makes it easy to please two people with slightly different travel styles.
Where to stay: The Four Seasons Maui at Wailea and The Ritz-Carlton Kapalua are both consistently excellent. Sheraton Maui offers solid mid-range beachfront value. Maui Coast Hotel is a comfortable, more budget-friendly option near the beach.
Paris works beautifully for a honeymoon when it is planned well. The key is neighborhood and hotel. The right base makes the city feel intimate and walkable rather than overwhelming. Mornings at a corner café, afternoons in museums, long dinners, and evenings that stretch well past dark. Paris rewards couples who want to feel romantic without working too hard at it.
Where to stay: Le Bristol and Shangri-La both offer the full Parisian luxury experience. Hotel Napoleon Paris is a polished mid-range choice near the Champs-Élysées. Hotel des Grandes Ecoles is a charming, quieter option with a lovely garden.
A safari honeymoon is in a category of its own. There is nothing quite like sitting in an open vehicle at sunrise, watching a lion move through tall grass with your new spouse beside you. South Africa offers some of the best private game reserve experiences in the world, and the luxury lodges are genuinely exceptional.
Where to stay: Sabi Sabi Earth Lodge and Londolozi Tree Camp are both world-class and deeply romantic. Kapama River Lodge offers a strong mid-range safari experience with excellent guiding. Tamboti Tented Camp in Kruger is a more rustic, budget-conscious option for adventurous couples.
The Amalfi Coast is one of those places that looks exactly like its photographs and somehow still manages to exceed expectations when you are standing in it. Cliffside villages, blue water, lemon groves, and some of Italy’s most memorable food. I know this coastline personally, and I can tell you that the right pacing makes all the difference here.
Where to stay: Le Sirenuse in Positano is iconic for very good reason. Belmond Hotel Caruso in Ravello is one of the most beautiful properties in Italy. Hotel Santa Caterina offers refined mid-range luxury with stunning Mediterranean views. Hotel La Ninfa is a more affordable option that still captures the magic of the coast.
Your honeymoon should feel like the beginning of something, not just a vacation you recover from. The destination is a starting point, but the experience comes down to how it is planned, how the days are paced, and whether the details reflect who you actually are as a couple.
When you are ready to start putting it together, I would love to help. Honeymoon planning is one of my favorite things to do, and getting it right matters.
