WHY COSTA RICA IS THE PERFECT MIX OF WILD, WARM , AND WOW

Costa Rica is one of those places that earns every bit of its reputation. It’s a small country, but it protects around five percent of the world’s biodiversity, runs almost entirely on renewable energy, and has operated without a military since 1949. What you get in return is something rare: a destination where the rainforest, the volcano, and the beach all exist within a few hours of each other, and where the local philosophy of Pura Vida, which translates loosely to pure life, shapes every interaction you have. Slow down, soak it in, and enjoy where you are. It’s a genuinely good way to travel.

The places most trips are built around

Monteverde is where most first-time visitors start to understand what makes Costa Rica different. The cloud forest here sits above the valley in a permanent mist, with hanging bridges threading through the canopy and the sound of birds layered underneath everything. The resplendent quetzal lives in these forests, one of the most vividly colored birds in the world, and spotting one feels like something out of a nature documentary. It’s the kind of place that slows you down in the best way.

White sand beach lined with palm trees and tropical forest at Manuel Antonio National Park in Costa Rica.

Manuel Antonio National Park is small but consistently one of the most rewarding spots in the country. Trails wind through forest dense with monkeys and sloths before opening onto white sand beaches where you can spend the afternoon in the water. The combination of jungle and coast in one compact area is hard to beat anywhere in Central America.

Arenal is the visual centerpiece of Costa Rica, a nearly perfect volcanic cone that dominates the horizon and serves as the hub for much of the country’s adventure activity. Zip lines, waterfall hikes, and natural hot springs all cluster around this area, and La Fortuna Waterfall is worth the steep descent for the swim waiting at the bottom.

Tortuguero sits on the Caribbean coast and operates at a completely different pace from the rest of the country. There are no roads in, only boats and small planes, and the park itself is a network of rivers, canals, and dense jungle that you explore by kayak or guided boat. Crocodiles, monkeys, and an extraordinary variety of birds are regular sightings, and between July and October the beaches become nesting grounds for sea turtles, one of the most moving wildlife experiences Costa Rica offers. The Sea Turtle Conservancy has been protecting these beaches for decades and their work is a big part of why this still happens at all.

The Osa Peninsula is for travelers who want to go deeper. Corcovado National Park, which occupies most of the peninsula, has been called one of the most biologically intense places on Earth, and a day hiking through it makes that easy to believe. This is off-grid, untouched, genuinely wild in a way that few places still are.

Costa Rica has two completely different coastlines and they don’t feel anything alike. The Pacific side is where most visitors spend their time, with Tamarindo drawing surfers and a lively beach town crowd, Playa Conchal offering some of the most beautiful sand in the country, and the Guanacaste region delivering long stretches of coast with reliable dry season weather that makes it one of the most popular areas in the country for good reason. The Caribbean side is quieter, more remote, and has a distinct Afro-Caribbean culture that gives towns like Puerto Viejo a character you won’t find anywhere on the Pacific. If you have the time, experiencing both coasts on a single trip is one of the things that makes Costa Rica feel like more than one destination.

How most people spend their time

Woman zip lining through the lush green rainforest canopy in Costa Rica.

Adventure is easy to find in Costa Rica and it tends to come in concentrated doses. Zip lining through the forest canopy above Monteverde or Arenal is one of the country’s signature experiences and worth doing at least once. White water rafting on the Pacuare River runs through jungle scenery dramatic enough to make the rapids feel almost secondary. The beaches at Tamarindo and Playa Conchal offer everything from surfing to complete stillness depending on what you need, and the sunsets along the Pacific coast have a way of making even the most scheduled traveler stop and just watch.

If wildlife is what draws you to a destination, Costa Rica rewards patience in a way few places do. Sloths, toucans, monkeys, crocodiles, and humpback whales in season are all genuinely possible without any special arrangement. You just need to be outside and paying attention. If unforgettable animal encounters are a priority for your travels, my guide to the world’s best wildlife experiences is worth a read before you start planning.

A few things worth knowing

Costa Rica is not a single-note destination and it rewards travelers who treat it that way. The Caribbean coast and the Pacific coast feel like different countries. The cloud forest and the volcano country operate on completely different rhythms. A well-planned trip moves through two or three of these zones rather than staying put in one area, and the country is compact enough that this is easier than it sounds.
